Breeding Program of the Czech Warmblood
Introduction
Breeding of the Czech Warmblood Horse (CW) is in accordance with The Breeding Act No. 154/2000 (Livestock Breeding and Registration Act). The breeding practices will conform to the rules of the program worked out by the Breeding Council (BC) and ratified by the committee of the Czech Warmblood Horse Association (CWA). The CWA manages the Studbook of Czech Warmblood horses bred in the Czech Republic. The CWA is to manage the Czech Warmblood Studbook and to ensure the realization of the breeding program.
The Breeding program contains methods for reaching the breeding aim. There are evaluation of breeding type and conformation, performance tests, assessing the breeding value and the selection methods. The Breeding program accords with international standards and guarantees high-quality evaluation information for breeders. It ensures, in support of state resources, improving the genotype and performance ability of horses to increase their international competitiveness.
The Breeding program (BP) determines the breeding aim, the selection program, the acceleration program, the recording of performance results, efficiency and heredity, testing of type duality, assessment of breeding quality, recording and issueing of pedigree and performance and the publishing of breeding results.

The numbers of sires fluctuated between 200 - 250. The average number of mares covered by one sire is very low, which decreases the exactitude of the breeding value estimation. The CWA wants to change this situation namely by the higher requirements for stallion selection and the acceleration program.
2. Studbooks (SB)
The Breeding program includes all horses listed in the Studbook, which contains folowing the sections:
Stallion Book
Main Mare Book
Mare Book
Supplementary Mare Book
3. Breeding methods
For reaching the breeding aim, pure breeding is used. This means that all bred horses must be listed in the SB.
4. Stallion approval
Beside of Czech Warmblood stallions, it is also possible to approve stallions of different breeds for pure breeding, however this will be strictly qualified.
5. Approval of different breeds stallions
It is possible to approve stallions from the following breeds without explicit permission (after completing the same requirements as CW stallions):
Thoroughbred, Angloarab, Arab, Trakehner, all breeds of German Riding Horses, Dutch Riding Warmbloods, Belgian Riding Warmbloods, Selle Francais, Polish Riding Warmbloods, Swedish Riding Warmbloods, Danish Riding Warmbloods, Moravan Warmbloods, Slovak Warmbloods and Furioso Horses.
The equable warm-blooded pedigree is required of all the enumerated breeds. Breeds, which are approved by the BC, but are not enumerated, are possible to use only restrictedly. Other breeds which are not enumerated or approved by the BC are not aloowed to use.
6. Judgment and testing of performance qualities
The breeding type, sex expression, pedigree, conformation, performance and health are judged and tested by breeding stock. The rules are specified in the Testing Rules (TR).
7. Selection methods
Selection is made on the basis of judgment and performance tests.
The colts and stallions are selected by:

10. Acceleration program
For stimulation of horse breeders the CWA proclaims a selecting program for the owners of first-class breeding horses. The goal of the program is the acceleration of the selection of sport-horse breeding. It represents an effort to create so called "breeding core" of high-performance horses with outstanding pedigree. The CWA will endeavour (with potential support of the Ministry of Agriculture) to ensure that the tested mares are served with first-class sires of European quality. It will strive to ensure conditions for horse breeding so that Czech Warmblod is able to compete with the best performance breeds as soon as possible.
Selection requirements for the Acceleration program:
A) Sires:
1) Performance:
- 3 advance tests jumping competitions
- YHC winner (age-group of 6 years old)
- GP Special dressage competition

- Mares, which got on analogous abroad
11. Breeding value estimation
One successful foreign method is considered to be used for a breeding value estimation. Actually following steps are being done:
- programs for increasing of one-sire-progeny are supported
- judgement of foals at foot of mare, young colts in rearing facilities, mare foals and mares before the Studbook approval
- organizing basic performance tests and 100-day test
- sport results evaluation
12. Rearing facilities for testing young horses (RFT)
The operation of rearing facilities is managed by the operating rules authorized by the CWA. The rules specify the animal records, zoohygiene requirements and rearing methods.
RFT are instituted to provide high-quality colt rearing and to get early information about sires, especially those selected for the acceleration program. The goal is to test their offspring and next the performance and conformation of young colts within a peer group.
Only a facility which enables rearing and schooling a peer group of 10 colts and organizing a basic performance test can be approved as a test site.
Minimum equipment of RFT
- fenced pasture with watering-amenity
0,3 hectars for colts younger then 1 year
0,4 hectars for 1-3 years old colts
0,5 hectars for stallions older than 3 years
- loose-stable which enables individual feeding
- spot with firm surface for inspecting the horses
- course for judgement of movement and jumping talent
- stable and pasture separated for each peer group
- qualified personnel (with basic knowledge of zoohygiene and veterinary operations)
For the execution of the basic performance test,: at least 10 loose-boxes, amenity for schooling and inspection the horses (if whatever weather) and experienced riding staff will be needed.
Owner of rearing facility for testing young horses guarantees the whole course of the test, including the final exam.
Examination Rules for the Czech Warmblood
In the Examination Rules (ER) the regulations for the individual testing methods and for inspector naming are described.
An inspector is a person who is a member of the CWA or who is named by the CWA committee.
Regional inspectors will provide CWA inspection activities in entrusted area. The CWA Breeding Committee (BC) guarantees to appoint inspectors who are persons of the highest integrity and the greatest possible expertise. Horses under 3 years of age will be graded on a scale of 1 to 5, older horses (especially by approval or performance test) are graded on a scale from 1 to 10.
1. Judgement of foals at foot of a mare
The judgement does the entitled person by means of expertly qualified workers at the registration of a foal, at regional inspection and at breeding exibitions and when admitted into rearing facility.
Judgement will be made at regional inspections and at breeding exibitions by an Inspection Team (3 members), which will be appointed by the BC.
Foals will be graded with 2 marks on a scale of 1 to 5.
- mark: type, formation of the legs, conformation development. Foal will be judged at foot of a mare on a firm floor.
- mark: movement - trot, foal will be judged together with mare, which will be shown on a lead line
2. Inspection of breeding horses and jung horses at regional inspections
Judgement will bed one by an Inspection Team (3 members).
At regional inspections and exibitions the regional inspector will choose the other 2 members of the Inspection Team.
At national exibitions the CWA committee will name members of the Inspection Team on the basis of the BC proposal.
At exhibitions which are outside the scope of the breeding sphere the breeding section of CWA will chaose the Inspection Team.
Horses will be graded with 3 marks.
- mark: type, sex expression, pedigree
- mark: conformation, judgement is made on a firm floor
- mark: movement - walk, trot (show on a lead line)
3. Mare approvals
Judgement will be made by a regional inspector.
Qualities a), b1-6), d), f) and k) named in the article 8 of Breeiding program are judged. Qualities a) breeding type and sex expression and b1-6) conformation are judged on a firm floor. Qualities d) impulsion and elasticity (trot) and f) walk are judged when horse is shown on a lead line.
The marks are recorded into an approval document.
Mark k) represents total scoring.
4. 100-day test
The Inspection Team of 3 members at least for the admitting the 100-day test, the day of inspection and the day of the final test is appointed by the CWA chairman.
The permit to the 100-day test will be done after two-round pre-approval. The pre-approval will serve for the estimation of the stallion's ability to finish the test successfully. The second round of the approval will take place in the same testing facility where the 100-day test will be done. Before starting the test, keeper of stallion is required to demonstrate that the stallion is not rebellious when bridled, saddled or groomed. Contested cases will be decided by the Inspection Team. Judgement of breeding type, conformation and rhythm of movement will be done on firm and even ground. Movement and loose jumping will be judged in an indoor arena. The method for loose jumping is the same as that for the 100-day test, however the obstacles are 10 cm lower.
The 100-day testand the final test are made in a riding facility set by the CWA. Just such stallions are allowed to attend the 100-day test who fulfil all the necessary conditions for approval after the final test and for following enter into stallion Studbook. Only stallions who reach 3 years of age during that year in which the test is done will be allowed to be tested. Only healthy stallions and the ones free of genetic defects may attend the test. A monitoring day is organized after 50 days of the test when schooling quality of chosen stallions or of all the stallions is checked. The owner of a stallion can whithdraw his stallion of his own accord or potentially on recommendation of the test supervisor or of the Inspection Team.
Stallion owners will be informed about the monitoring date and the date of the final test.
The following will be judged in the 100-day test:
- breeding type
- conformation
- performance
- total impression and development
The grading will be done in the final test.
The grading will be done by the Inspection Team except for the marks pertaining to h) schooling and g) rideability.
Breeding type and sex expression (a)
Judged as specified in breeding program. Also pedigree will be taken into account.
Conformation (b)
Judged qualities are described in the breeding program.
The single qualities b1) - b6) will be judged.
Presentation will be made while standing on a firm floor.
Performance (c,d,e,f,g,h,i,j)
Judged as specified in the breeding program.
Rhythm of movement (c)
Judged on a lead line on a firm floor after the grading of qualities a) and
b) has been completed.
Impulsion and elasticity (at the trot) (d)
Presentation will be done on a lead line on a firm floor after the
judgement of qualities a) and b) has been completed.
The quality will be judged during g) loose jumping i)
rideability and j) jumping test under a saddle.
Canter (e)
Canter will be judged during g), i), j)
Walk (f)
Presentation, which will be done on a lead line, on a firm floor,
will ensue after judgement of qualities a) and b) has been made.
Walk will also be judged during i) and j).
Loose jumping (g)
The judgement will be made in an indoor arena on a jumping lane (annex 1 of ER) and the horse is led on a lead line into the jumping lane.
The starting height of the oxer will be 110 cm, the closing height will be 140 cm. Each following attempt will be made on an obstacle which is 10 cm higher.
Only if the stallion gets over the obstacle without knock-down, will he be allowed to make an attempt on a heightened obstacle.
The third fault (regardless whether a refusal or knock-down) on an obstacle of the same height will result in a 0 score.
The stallion may continue on obstacles higher than 140 cm with the agreement of the owner and the test supervisor.
In this case the above defined rules need to be upheld.
Schooling (h)
The mark for schooling is a result of the average of the following:
- character in stable
- character under saddle
- character during shoeing
- temperament
- constitution
- feedability
- docility
Stallions are graded by the test supervisor and the marks will be recorded into an examination form.
Rideability
The mark for rideability is an average mark, which represents the grading by the test supervisor and by two testing riders.
The following is judged:
- suppleness, elasticity and balance
- concentration, response to the rider's aids and willingness to follow them
- movement (elasticity, rhythm and jumping)
The test supervisor will judge the rideability through the observation of qualities outlined above for the 100-day test. Testing riders will grade the rideability on the basis of the following method:
Horses may be warmed up in 15 minutes without a rider. Each rider will test the stallion no more than 30 minutes up to the degree that the final test demands. The riders will have the same obstacle equipment as described in Annex 1 of ER at their disposal.

Mounted jumping test (j)
The test is performed in the indoor or outdoor arena on the jumping lane and the jumping course.
Stallion will attempt the jumping lane three times (see the annex 1 of BP). The starting height of the obstacle will be raised to 120 cm regardless of certain faults.
After that the stallion will continue on the jumping course with obstacles of 100 cm. The jumping course is pictured in annex 1 of BP. A third refusal will result in the termination of the test and a score of 0 points. The stallions will be graded with one mark in this test. The mark is comprised of judgement of willingness, jumping style, caution, rhythm of movement, suppelness and rideability.
Total impression and development (k)
The judgement principles are adduced in BP.
Total scoring represents a scoring of:
- Type and sex expression
- Conformation
- Performance
Individual marks and the test result will be recorded in an examination form. The test is concluded only when thetotal scoring of the test reaches min. 7,1 p. for a) and b) and the mark of the testing is min. 6,1 p. for c) - j) - see BR, art. 6a).
5. Basic performance test
The test undergo three years old mares registred in a studbook (fulfilling all requirements for entering into Main Mare Book and Mare Book) and stallions reared in rearing facility. The breeder can decide for a riding test or a carriage test.
Riding test
Parts of the test:
- Loose jumping 100-110-120 cm, breadth 110 cm - see annex 1 of BP.
- Dressage test - see annex 2 of BP.
- Cavaletti lane - see annex 1 of BP.
- Jumping lane - see annex 1 of BP.
Loose jumping will be performed in a lane to which the horses will be lead on a lead line. The dressage test will be performed in an arena of 20 m x 60 m. Only a jointed mouthpiece may be used. Auxiliary reins, martingale, spurs and whip longer than 75 cm are not allowed. Brushing boots are allowed only for jumping. The rider must be dressed in accordance with the Rules of the Czech Riding Federation (CRF) and the dressage test reader will provide the horse owner.
A) The basic performance test (BPT) of mares is organized by regional inspectors. Members of the Inspection Team is named by the CWA chairman. The team will consist at least of 3 inspectors members (a CWA member, a representative of CRF and a regional inspektor). The date and the place of the BPT is approved of the breeding section.
A mare can pass 1 BPT and in case of its default is allowed 1 makeup BPT.
The following will be judged:
- movement by dressage test
- gifted abilities
- willingness to work and character during time of test
- jumping talent
- quality of preparation
The total scoring represents the average of the individual marks by the inspectors.
The marks and total scoring are recorded into an examination form.
A mare completes the test when total scoring reaches 6,1 points. No mark may be lower than 5 points.
If the score reached by the test is higher than the previous score reached by mare approval, it is possible to enter the mare into the higher book in this situation. However pedigree requirements must be kept.
B) The basic performance test of stallions is organized by a keeper of rearing facility.
The Inspector Team consists at least of 3 members, which are appointed by the CWA chairman. Only members of CWA committe, members of the Breeding Council and of the NRF and the regional inspectors may be included in the Inspection Team.
The stallions will be graded the same as the mares, with the exception of the following amendments:
- breeding type and sex expression (same as the 100-day test)
- conformation (same as the 100-day test) - judged on a firm floor
- schooling (see the BP)
The marks are recorded into an examination form.
Carriage test
Only mares may undergo this type of test. It is organized by regional inspectors. The Inspection Team is named by the CWA chairman. The Inspection Team will be of the same composition as the Riding test.
One or two horses in harness in a lightweight carriage undergo the test.
Arena: 40m x 100m
Movement and ease of control: read dressage test - see annex 2 of ER.
Immediately after completion of the dressage test, the obstacle driving test will begin. See the course plan in the annex 1 of ER.
Brushing boots and auxiliary reins are not allowed.
Pulling test: 3 x stop and pull in a light-weight carriage on 100 m course.
Light-weight carriage: single harness (2 persons)
The following is judged:
- movement and ease of control coeff. 0,4
- willingness
coeff. 0,4
- preparedness
coeff. 0,2
The marks of each inspector are multiplied with the coefficient and after that the summation is done. The average of these marks represents the total score. Behaviour during poling up and taking out is taken into consideration.
Each mark is recorded into the examination form.
A mare completes the test when total scoring reaches 6,1 points. No mark may be lower than 5 points.
The entering into a higher book is possible under the same conditions as in the riding test.
6. Judgement of colts in the RFT
The test is organized by the keeper of the rearing facility. The judgement is made by an Inspection Team, which consists of 3 members (1 member of the Breeding Committee, 1 member of the Breeding Council and a regional inspector). The Inspection Team is appointed by the CWA committee by proposal of the Breeding Committee.
The Inspection Team admits the colt to the rearing facility (TRF) on the basis of the breeder's application (which needs to be confirmed by the regional inspector) and judgement of the horse. Just 5-9 months old CW colts with 4 generations within growth standard and without genetic defects may be admitted before the 30th of October. The test may start only if a minimum of 10 colts in the peer group are admitted.
In the TRF the following will be judged
- weanlings after admission
The following will be judged:
- growth, frame, formation of the legs (on a firm floor),
- movement at the trot (on a moving course)
Colts will be graded by 2 marks on scale of 1 to 5.
- colts 1 and 2 years old before and after pasture season.
The following will be judged:
- growth according to growth standard, frame, formation of the legs and rhythm of movement (on a firm floor)
- movement at the trot and jumping (on a moving course)
Height of the obstacle: 80 cm (1-2 year-old colts)
100 cm (2-3- year-old colts)
Colts will be graded by 2 marks on scale of 1 to 5.
- 3- year- old stallions before the start of pasture season
The following will be judged:
- breeding type, frame, formation of the legs and rhythm of movement (on a firm floor)
- movement at the trot and jumping of the obstacle 100 cm high
Colts will be graded by 2 marks on scale of 1 to 5.
All the marks are recorded into a documentaion form.
The test lasts 940 - 960 days. The test is closed by the basic performance test (see the ER, item 5) which the stallion undergoes at the age of 3 years.
A colt or stallion may be expelled from the test by decision of the Inspection Team or if dies.
7. Stallion approval
Stallion will be evaluated whose owner has asked for permit into the stallion book.
- after performance kriteria of YHC or after sport performance and other stallions who fulfil the conditions for entering Stallion Book and their breeding type, sex expression and conformation were not judged.
The inspection is done by an Inspection Team which consists of 3 members of the Breeding Council and the committee.
The Inspection Team is appointed by the CWA committee.
The following is judged:

All servings will be recorded in the BF, including insemination and embryotransfer.
Each mating will be recorded to the Breeding sheet with 3 carbon copies.
The original sheet will be sent to the Central database via the CWA after the breeding season.
The first copy will be kept at the CWA after the breeding season.
Keeper of the served mare obtains the second and third copy. The second copy will serve as a notice about foal birth and mating result. The breeder must send this copy to the regional inspector after the result of mating is clear or a maximum of 14 days after the foal birth.

The pedigree paper will be issued after the listing and brand-marking of the foal. The
breeder must send the Breeding sheet to the CWA before issue of the pedigree paper. It is possible to issue pedigree paper for grown-up horses after a third copy of the Breeding sheet has been presented by the owner of the horse. The third copy of the Breeding sheet may be used as an official pedigree paper (e.g. for sale, exibition and inspection).
The CWA may verify the pedigree through the testing of blood groups or of other polymorphic marks.
If the foal is born after insemination or emryotransfer, the pedigree testing is necessary for the issue of a pedigree paper to take place.
12. Marking, identification and naming of the horse
The marking and identification of CWA horses accords with the Ordinance N. 136/2004 to the Act 154/2000.

- Each foal is brand-marked at foot of a mare, however at no later than at age of 8 months.
- The foal will be brand-marked with 2 numbers to the right saddle. The upper max. two-figure number signifies number of the Registration book where the foal is listed. The lower max. three-figure number
represents the listing order in the Registration book.
- Apart of the brandmarking, the CW offspring will be marked with the symbol CT on the left thigh.
- The owner brand-marking (on the right thigh) is undesirable for CW horses, however not banned.
The Czech Warmblood breed has 22 as an international code. It will be the first digit of the identification number of the horses listed in the Studbook.
Brand-marking of horses born abroad:
Foals exported in the mares body or via embryotransfer may be marked as CW foals with the approval of the CWA.
Each horse obtains a nine-figure Identification number (IN). The IN will stay same for duration of the life of the horse, never mind if the horse is entered to the other Studbook during his life.
IN consists of:
Example: sire 474 Fors Gedos
220621290
22 -code of the Studbook
06 -number of the Registration book
212 - order in the Registration book
90 - year of the birth
Determination of the genetic type by means of blood testing
The genetic type of each stallion must be determined before listing in the Stallion Book. The costs of the genetic type determination are to be paid by the owner of the stallion.
The CWA may verify pedigree of any horse (foal or grown-up). In this case the DNA tests are paid by the CWA and the documents of pedigree verifying must be deposited by the CWA.
Pedigree must be verified before the Cerificate of pedigree is issued if:
1. The foal is born after artificial insemination or emryotransfer - paid by the owner
2. The sire is not sure because
- the dam was mated more then once (different stallions) during rutting season
- the foal was not registered at foot of a mare
Costs are to be paid by the owner of the horse.
Naming of the horses
When approved the stallion gets a name with same initial as the name of his sire. No stallion may be registered under a name which is a duplicate name of a stallion which has already been registered in the CWA Stallion Book. Full male siblings, however, may use duplicate names with the appropriate ordinál I, II etc.).
A duplicate name may be also used again when 2 generations have passed.
Imported stallions are not to be re-named.
The Naming of mares is arbitrary.
13. Membership in the Studbook
Membership in the CW Studbook is full and registered.
